Toolbox talks for a safe industry - new CIRIA project

The construction sector is one of the largest employers in the EU. The welfare of this workforce continues to be a relevant theme. Despite this recent health and safety statistics report a 28 per cent increase on fatal deaths compared to last year. Of this 30 per cent of deaths were due to falls from a height and 21 per cent due to being hit by a moving or falling object. This indicates a greater need for health and safety awareness across the construction industry.

Toolbox talks (proposal 2457) are health and safety cards used successfully as training devices. The development and maintenance of a safe working environment can only be effective if everyone is included and actively involved. Toolbox talks are an invaluable method of involving all those who may be at risk.

Benefits include:
• no major costs
• implemented with considerable flexibility
• individual content can be arranged to suit different training requirements.

Most importantly this resource can help companies to meet health and safety policies by:
• raising awareness of issues
• encouraging the discussion of how possible accidents could occur
• reduce accident rates
• save lives.

CIRIA is proposing a collaborative process that will see the development of Toolbox talks to aid performance and health and safety on-site. This will include the translation of the talks and their dissemination across Europe.
